NCERT Solutions for Class 7 Maths Chapter 3 Data Handling Introduction

This chapter is very interesting because it teaches us step by step how to manage numbers and information in real life. Here are the main topics covered:

  • Data Collection – how to gather information.
  • Data Organization – arranging data in order.
  • Data Interpretation – understanding what the data shows.
  • Tables and Frequency Distribution Tables – putting data in tables to see patterns and trends.
  • Graphs – bar graphs, pictographs, and double bar graphs to present data visually.
  • Mean, Median, and Mode – finding the central tendency or representative value of a dataset.
  • Probability (Chance and Likelihood) – simple ideas of chance in daily life.

In Class 7 Maths Chapter 3 Data Handling, students will learn how data is collected from different sources and then organized properly so that it becomes easy to study. For example, if I want to know how many students like cricket in my class, I can collect data and put it into a table.

Then, students will observe how frequency distribution tables can be used to get patterns and trends. Such tables are useful in the comparison of data and its better interpretation. Students are trained to create graphs such as bar graphs as well as pictographs. Graphs are also very helpful, as the data is demonstrated in forms of pictures, which makes the learning process more enjoyable and easier.

This chapter also introduces to the concepts of mean, median, and mode.

  • Mean is the average of numbers.
  • Median is the middle value of data when arranged in order.
  • Mode is the number that appears the most in the data.

Together, they are called measures of central tendency and they give a representative value of the dataset.

Finally, will learn the basics of probability, which tells about the chance of something happening, like the chance of getting heads when I toss a coin.

(iii) Range = 9 – 1 = 8
(iv) Sum of marks = 100, Number of marks = 20
Arithmetic Mean = 100 ÷ 20 = 5

Q5. Following table shows the points each player scored in four games. Now answer the following questions.

(i) Find the mean to determine A’s average number of points scored per game.
(ii) To find the mean number of points per game for C, would you divide the total points by 3 or 47? Why?
(iii) B played in all the four games. How would you find the mean?
(iv) Who is the best performer?

PlayerGame 1Game 2Game 3Game 4Total
A1416101050
B086418
C811-1332

Answer:

(i) A’s mean = 50 ÷ 4 = 12.5
(ii) C played only 3 games, so divide total (32) by 3. Mean = 10.67
(iii) B’s mean = 18 ÷ 4 = 4.5
(iv) Best performer = A (highest average).

Q6. The marks (out of 100) obtained by a group of students in a science test are 85, 76, 90, 85, 39, 48, 56, 95, 81 and 75. Find the:

(i) The highest and the lowest marks obtained by the students.
(ii) Range of the marks obtained.
(iii) Mean marks obtained by the group.

Answer:
(i) Highest = 95, Lowest = 39
(ii) Range = 95 – 39 = 56
(iii) Sum = 730, Number = 10
Mean = 730 ÷ 10 = 73

Q7. The enrolment in a school during six consecutive years was as follows: 1555, 1670, 1750, 2013, 2540, 2820. Find the mean enrolment of the school for this period.

Answer:
Sum = 12348
Mean = 12348 ÷ 6 = 2058

Q8. The rainfall (in mm) in a city on 7 days of a certain week recorded as follows

32, 12, 48, 20, 50, 42, 0

(i) Find the range of the rainfall in the above data.
(ii) Find the mean rainfall for the week.
(iii) On how many days was the rainfall less than the mean rainfall.

Answer:
(i) Range = 50 – 0 = 50
(ii) Mean = (32+12+48+20+50+42+0) ÷ 7 = 204 ÷ 7 = 29.14 mm
(iii) Days with rainfall less than mean = 12, 20, 0 → 3 days

Q9. The height of 10 girls were measured in cm and the results are as follows: 135, 150, 139, 128, 151, 132, 146, 149, 143, 141

(i) What is the height of the tallest girl?
(ii) What is the height of the shortest girl?
(iii) What is the range of data?
(iv) What is the mean height of the girls?
(v) How many girls have heights more than the mean height?

Answer:
(i) Tallest = 151 cm
(ii) Shortest = 128 cm
(iii) Range = 151 – 128 = 23 cm
(iv) Sum = 1414, Mean = 1414 ÷ 10 = 141.4 cm
(v) Heights above mean = 150, 151, 146, 149, 143 → 5 girls
