A definite article is used when we are talking about something specific or already known by both the speaker and the listener. The only definite article in English is “the”. It makes the noun clear and exact.

  • Example: I’m going to the store. (Here, “the store” means a particular store which both people know about.)
  • Example: Can you pass me the book? (Here, “the book” is a special one already being discuss.)

Grammar rule: Use “the” when the thing is unique or already talked about.
